Teenagers these days are generally unaware of the fact that the e-cigarettes which they smoke are as dangerous to their respiratory tract as normal nicotine substances. Since e-cigarettes are claimed to be the ones containing less amount of the addictive substance nicotine, Study suggests that fact be proven wrong.
The researchers who collected the study data and studied the number of teenagers who were involved in vaping and using e-cigarettes.
E-Cigarettes and Future Cigarette Use
The study consisted of 50 adolescents and out of which 40% of the teenagers had the notion that the use of their nicotine-free products tends to have a positive health result and they will attain positive urine tests.
“This is one of the first studies showing the amount of nicotine the teenagers are getting from e-cigarettes for the first time,” said the study’s lead author Dr. Rachel Boykan, a clinical associate professor of pediatrics in the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University.
“They’re getting a lot — as much or more than they would with traditional cigarettes.”
The analysis of urine samples showed that the teenagers who use the vaping products and e-cigarettes tend to have a large amount of nicotine in their blood and of which they are unaware about, Boykan said.
Experts are worried about the ill effects of e-cigarettes on young children and want to stop the use of them since many young people use vape products along with marijuana.
Cotinine is a metabolite found in the urine which can be a source of knowledge to guess the amount of nicotine in the body.
Cotinine levels were highest among adolescents using a newer vaping technology: pod mods. A pod mod is an e-cigarette that uses a disposable pod or cartridge. The levels of cotinine in pod users were nearly the level seen in tobacco smokers.
People who vaped older versions of e-cigarettes had much lower levels of cotinine in their urine samples.
